Depending on your budget and the number of days available to you, you may want to include a short stay in Rome prior to visiting Umbria - in which case Rome is a good Airport to fly into.

It is best to travel to Umbria in the spring (April to May) and autumn months (September to October). But if you hate to be a part of a large crowd, you can go to Umbria during the winter months when there will be comparatively few tourists.

The best time to visit Umbria for events is spring or summer where you can enjoy Spoleto's Festival of Two Worlds and Perugia's Umbria Jazz Festival. The culinary delights are at their best during winter, however, and though the region can be very cold, winter is the best time to get to know the unassuming Umbria and its people. From London, Great Britain, one can choose to take a British Airways or any other airways direct non-stop flight to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, Rome, and reach the destination within 2 hours and 30 minutes.

From here one may proceed by a taxi to Perugia, the capital city of Umbria which is 210 km away, along the Rome - Florence motorway, or to another important city Terni which is about 120 km away. If you prefer a train journey to taxi you can take a train and go to Perugia though Orte, Tern, Spoleto, Foligno, and Assisi. One can even take a train from Rome, and after an hour’s journey, reach Orvieto, a small town of Umbria.

Those who do not want to go to Umbria via Rome can go first off to Raffaello Sanzio Airport, Falconara (Ancona). From here Perugia is 155 km away or they can enplane for Amerigo Vespucci Airport, Florence. At a distance of 160 km from here is Perugia. You can either go by car to Perugia, or take a National Railways train and reach Perugia through the stations of Terontola, and Passignano sul Trasimeno. A longer route to Perugia would be to go to Galileo Galilei Airport, Pisa. 230 km from Perugia, or alternatively, to Federico Fellini International Airport, Rimini, which is 220 km from Perugia.

If you are travelling from London, you can take a British Airways flight to Umbria International Airport, 12 km away from Perugia. Umbria is a place offering loads of tourist attractions so plan for a long trip in Umbria and cut short visit can cut short the fun as well. Having reached Umbria one can stay either in farmhouses/farmhouse apartments which are many, for instance the San Felicissimo, or for those who are liberal with money there are luxury hotels, like Monte Solare, Rocca Paolina, La Lanterna, Palazzo dei Priori, Ubu Re, etc. One may even chose to stay at Rome or Florence, etc., and then you can spend the days visiting the towns of Umbria returning to Rome at night.
